Philippine Rice Crisis
An intriguing op-ed appeared in Sun Star, Davao edition, a few days back. Took me all this while to blog about it because I tried looking for the said item in their website (no luck) and that I was threatened with death by application of pain inducing paraphernalia by an old enemy: Procrastination.
The op-ed posed an intriguing question: Is there really a rice shortage in the Philippines?
Or is it a fabricated shortage to distract the media and the public from the ZTE imbroglio?
Or is it merely a deux-ex-machina? A minor crisis (just difficulties in supplies really) that is fanned out of proportion for reasons that mere mortals (and even more mere bloggers) are not supposed to speculate upon.
Ah... yes the Joys of Paranoia.

Zimbabwe 2008 Election
It has been three weeks since Zimbabwe held elections and the results are, uh..., unaccounted for.
Take it from us, here in the Philippines. On the last Presidential election in 2004, it took about a month just to agree to the RULES for canvassing.
And another month for the results to be announced.

Philippine Rice Shortage
Repeat after me:
"There is no rice shortage in the Philippines".
"Do not trust politically inclined persons spouting useless populists policies to be paid for by tax payers".
"Blame CARP."
"Blame growing middle class."
" Go, go Power Rangers."
Food prices all over the world are skyrocketing. Even Italians are fretting about their pasta. Why are prices rising? Drought, less land for growing food, market distortions (think, Ethanol related subsidies, any farm subsidies).
In the Philippines, unscrupulous traders are reselling royally expensive rice, purchased and imported by the government (AT THE EXPENSE OF TAX PAYERS like, uh..., me), at current market price rather than subsidized government price. This is why I hate government in business and price subsidies. Tax payers lose, twice. Thrice. Who knows how many times tax payers get stabbed. Slashed. Drawn. Quartered.

According to the 1987 Constitution of The Republic of The Philippines, Article XI Section 2 and Section 3 (from http://www.chanrobles.com/article11.htm):
The Ombudsman can wash their hands with clean conscience (*snicker*). It is up to Congress, the House of Representatives and the Senate.
Section 2. The President, the Vice-President, the Members of the Supreme Court, the Members of the Constitutional Commissions, and the Ombudsman may be removed from office on impeachment for, and conviction of, culpable violation of the Constitution, treason, bribery, graft and corruption, other high crimes, or betrayal of public trust. All other public officers and employees may be removed from office as provided by law, but not by impeachment.
Section 3. (1) The House of Representatives shall have the exclusive power to initiate all cases of impeachment.
(2) A verified complaint for impeachment may be filed by any Member of the House of Representatives or by any citizen upon a resolution or endorsement by any Member thereof, which shall be included in the Order of Business within ten session days, and referred to the proper Committee within three session days thereafter. The Committee, after hearing, and by a majority vote of all its Members, shall submit its report to the House within sixty session days from such referral, together with the corresponding resolution. The resolution shall be calendared for consideration by the House within ten session days from receipt thereof.
(3) A vote of at least one-third of all the Members of the House shall be necessary either to affirm a favorable resolution with the Articles of Impeachment of the Committee, or override its contrary resolution. The vote of each Member shall be recorded.

PDI: "Arroyo to traders: No price hikes"
Like hell why not?
Price are up because demand outstrip supply.
Oh? And how does one lower oil prices? Bomb America?
This is why government should not be in business. Competition is tough, only suicidal idiots raise prices in tough economic times.
Why is supply short?
I do not know.
Perhaps government meddling in economic fundamentals discourage adequate supply.
Perhaps the ships bringing in the rice got held up by pirates. Or customs. Hard to tell apart the two entities.
Perhaps the government does not want to admit another inadequate harvest due to more of the same useless policies that has been in place since... uh... since...
Right... when time gets tough, the tough gets paranoid and bureaucratic instead of implementing a better agricultural policy. Free hint: ditch CARP and go corporate farming.
Yeah, yeah, yeah... Civil servants know this is just bullshit, I see them bedeck in jewelry, live in better houses and drive newer cars than I do, military officers chauffeured in their SUVs laden with loot from a shopping spree.
What is that I hear? Where is it coming? Wait... its coming from the Bureau of Internal Revenue! They are singing praises, convulsing with ecstasy, shouting joyously: "Thank You! Thank You! Dear Lord Gloria for the bounty!"

To Anti-Arroyo Protesters
Go away.
I do not have much enthusiasm for her either.
But go away.
I would rather deal with a Devil I know, who's term ends in 2 years, than enthrone a scheming Devil I do not know.
I would rather deal with a Devil I know, who's economic stewardship have been fair, than enthrone a greedy Devil I do not know.
We have been here before, twice. First time was a necessity, second time may have been a mistake. Neither times turned out as well as was hoped.
To those who criticized People Power, they were right. Nothing good has come out of this. Mea Culpa.
The Philippine Armed Forces is still playing politics.
The Philippine Catholic Church is still playing politics.
The Philippine Political Establishment is still playing... musical chairs.

Senator Manuel Araneta Roxas II and Crude Oil Prices and VAT
I caught a news item in Mindanao Times yesterday.
It was Senator Manuel Araneta Roxas II, A.K.A Senator Mar Roxas, lambasting the government for not doing anything about high oil prices. He added that VAT for crude oil should be eliminated to help the Republic's benighted citizenry.
No.
If Senator Mar Roxas wishes to blame someone, somebody, something about high oil prices, I will name three: USA, China and India.
If Senator Mar Roxas wishes to lower oil prices by eliminating VAT, I will say roll over and play dead before I beat you senseless with a chap stick.
As a citizen who's income tax is being collected by the government IN ADVANCE (remember when you paid at the end of the year?), I will not agree to any move that will result in more subsidies to those who do not pay income tax IN ADVANCE, if at all, (politicians? members of the entertainment industry married to politicians?) by eliminating VAT on oil.

I resent politicians using populist policies as a means to further their career. This is why we have a lousy electorate voting lousy politicians creating lousy government espousing lousy policies resulting lousy economy.

22nd Anniversary of EDSA 1 People's Power Revolution
ANC news channel interviewed some people in Metro Manila as to why they are out there joining the protest.
One housewife said she'd rather relax and watch the Oscar's rather than go out in the heat and avoid 'trouble'.
One guy in a mall said it's useless, you kick one bad leader out and another bad leader will assume power. Anyway, he added, it's cooler in the mall.
One student in a mall said she'd rather do her homework with her classmates.
Now this is bad. They forgot what EDSA 1 was all about.
On the other hand, those using EDSA 1 as rallying point for/against the Arroyo administration do not really care what it was all about.

We are former government officials...
Someone sent a letter to a friend of mine calling for the ouster (again) of Arroyo's Administration (see his blog)
Funny... the 'We are former government officials who have held high positions in the current and previous administrations' did not bother to identify themselves...
Since they were in position, they had to be witnesses or (heavens forbid!) willing participants...
Calling for another extra-electoral change in government may mean they want their old jobs back so they can... ah... you know... um... do... uh... finish the unfinished...
